Theme of the day - Khel Khel main health

Activity - Power of Water
1. Fold a small sheet so that it can stand on its own.
2. On the sheet, draw an arrow pointing to the left or right.
3. Pur the empty glass in front of the sheet. The whole arrow should be visible thorough the glass.
4. Observer the arrow thorough the glass and fill it with water. To what direction does the arrow point ?
Scientific explanation
* The direction of the arrow changed because the image you see thorough the glass filled with water is reversed. Reserved images are created thanks to refraction a phenomenon where a beam of light bends due to a difference in the speed of light in the medium through which it travels.
* You will see another example of refraction if you put a spoon into a glass filled with Water. The spoon will looks as if it had two parts because the refraction of light is different in the air and in the water.
Tip
* If the experiment doesn't work. Place glass with close of further.
Health message: Explain your kids the power of water. Tell them it has the capacity to change even the direction of arrow which no other fluids like coke etc. can do. They will be prompted to drink plenty of water.

Breakfast provides many benefits to our health and wellbeing

Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast - that's where its name originates, breaking the fast! Without breakfast you are effectively running on empty, like trying to start the car with no petrol!
Nutritionists advise:
  • breakfast should be eaten within two hours of waking
  • a healthy breakfast should provide calories in the range of 20-35% of your guideline daily allowance (GDA).
Apart from providing us with energy, breakfast foods are good sources of important nutrients such as calcium, iron and B vitamins as well as protein and fibre. The body needs these essential nutrients and research shows that if these are missed at breakfast, they are less likely to be compensated for later in the day. Fruit and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals so try to include a portion of your daily five at breakfast, whether that be a banana or glass of fruit juice.
Breakfast can be good for waistline too, research shows those who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight and more likely to be within their ideal weight range compared with breakfast skippers. If you skip breakfast, you're more likely to reach for high sugar and fatty snacks mid-morning.

Anger Management for Young Children

What is anger and why does it need to be managed?

Anger is a normal human emotion. Uncontrolled anger, however, can lead to aggression. This can cause physiological problems and lead to harmful behavior.
Aggression first begins in the toddler years. This is when children are naturally more aggressive than any other age group. A toddler’s inability to talk may be one reason why aggression starts at this age.
Toddlers and young children need to learn how to control their emotions. Otherwise, frequent aggression over time can cause problems in school, at home and with their friends and family. Anger management helps a child develop better ways to cope with angry feelings.

Managing anger

The goal of anger management is to reduce negative feelings. This can help reduce the negative physiological changes caused by anger. Like other emotions, anger can cause physiological changes such as a rise in blood pressure, and an increase in your energy hormones like adrenaline.
There are three main ways your child can deal with angry feelings:

Give Praise for Children Okay Behavior

Parents praise their children for good behavior, and scold for the bad, but what about the in-between?
Children love getting attention from their parents, sometimes even if it's bad. "Parents tend to give attention to their child either by praising them for good behavior or punishing them for bad behavior. And at times a child will take either or," says Dr. Long, who advises to ignore your children when they are acting badly, such as whining to get attention. "If you yell at them, you are still giving them the interest they wanted, and therefore they will continue to use negative behavior to get a reaction from you," Dr. Long says. If you praise behavior, even when it is just okay, then your child will be more likely to repeat it because of the way you took notice.

How can I teach my child to make others happy?

Even as early as 10 months old, your baby can be taught how satisfying it is to help others. If you give her a bite of banana, let her do the same by feeding you a piece. Show her how happy her gesture makes you feel. If you brush her hair, give her a chance to brush yours. These small moments can encourage her to share and to care for others.

As your baby grows into a toddler, simple chores, such as putting her toys back in the toy box or dirty clothes in the laundry basket, can help her feel that she's making a valid contribution.

How your child treats and behaves with others will also come from how she sees you doing this. Babies are usually impressionable and also great mimics. So, if your baby sees you shouting or being rude to your maid then she may pick that up too. Your baby will be happy when she treats people with respect and kindness and sees how glad her behaviour makes them.

Disagreements are natural in all families, joint or nuclear. It’s better to sort out differences when your little one isn’t around. Keep your baby away from any heated discussions, aggression, or incidents of domestic violence as this may have a negative impact on her. In general, children need a happy environment with a loving family to thrive.

What is energy?

We all need energy to grow, stay alive, keep warm and be active. Energy is provided by the carbohydrate, protein and fat in the food and drinks we consume. It is also provided by alcohol. Different food and drinks provide different amounts of energy.
The amount of energy (measured in units of calories or kilo-joules) a food contains per gram is known as its energy density.
  • Foods with fewer calories per gram such as fruits, vegetables, soups, lean protein- and carbohydrate-rich foods have a relatively low energy density.
  • Foods with a high fat and/or low water content such as chocolate, fried snacks, nuts and crackers have a relatively higher energy density.
Carbohydrate is the most important source of energy for the body because it is the main fuel for both your muscles and brain. Sources of carbohydrate include starchy foods, e.g. bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, pulses and breakfast cereals.
Different people need different amounts of energy. This depends on your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which measures the amount of energy you use to maintain the basic functions of the body, as well as your level of activity.
Some activities use more energy than the others. The more active you are, the more energy your body uses up. Being physically active can increase your muscle mass and this means you will actually be using more energy all the time, even when you are resting.

How to Teach Good Behavior: Tips for Parents

Children must be taught good behavior so they can live and work well in society when they grow up. Good teaching includes rewards for good behavior. Your child's age should guide your choice of ways to teach. Some tips to help you teach your child are listed below.

DO:

  • Encourage your child and give lots of affection.
  • Reward good behavior. Praise your child and give extra attention when he or she does something right. Give a reward for good behavior.
  • Your child will copy your actions and words. Act and speak the way you want your child to act and speak.
  • Be kind, but firm.
  • Remove temptations (like breakable items) before children get into trouble. Preventing bad behavior is always easier than correcting a problem.
  • Ignore some small problems or annoying behaviors. Bigger problems need to be corrected, especially if the child's bad behavior might be harmful or dangerous.
  • Be consistent. Always treat a bad behavior the same way, or your child will learn that he or she can sometimes “get away with it.”
  • Correct your child soon after the bad behavior occurs, but wait until your anger has passed. Counting to 10 before you say something or do something may help reduce your anger so you are in control of yourself.
  • Make rules that are right for your child's age. Rules work best for children who are school-aged. Younger children (infants and toddlers) don't understand rules yet. They are still learning what a rule is.
  • Use “time-out” for children between 18 months and five years of age. Time-out may help correct bad behaviors like tantrums, whining, fighting, and arguing. To use time-out, put your child in a chair with no toys or TV. Don't speak to your child during time-out. Time-out should last one minute for each year of the child's age. For example, a four-year-old should be in time-out for four minutes. Your child should be quiet for at least 15 seconds before timeout ends.
  • Correct older children by taking away things they like (TV or video games, or time with friends).
  • Remember to tell your child that the behavior was bad, but the child isn't “bad.”

*Is Brown Bread Best *

To break the myth of what sounds healthy and what actually is healthy , we need to deconstruct what whole-wheat bread is.
Whole-wheat bread has no added beneficial ingredient that can enhance its nutritional composition. In fact, whole-wheat bread has extra gluten In it to get the sponginess. Due to the presence of fibre in wheat bread , gluten needs to be stepped up to 14 percent , whereas white bread has natural gluten content of up to 12 percent. But extra yeast and sugar is added to the wheat bread to enhance its taste, which in turn increases its calorific
Gluten is definitely present in white bread , but in brown wheat bread ,extra gluten powder , yeast and sugar are added which increases its calorific value. So it is in no way a healthier option.

Activity tips for children

Physical activity helps children grow strong bones, maintain a healthy weight, and discover the world around them. Best of all, it's great fun.

All children should be physically active for at least one hour a day. You can help by encouraging your child to find activities they enjoy, and building physical activity into family life. Most children love running around a park or playing in a playground.

Teach children how to correct their misbehavior.

If a child throws food onto the floor give him a broom and show him how to clean it up. If a child draws on the wall, give her a wet cloth to clean the wall. Even if the child cannot successfully clean up the entire mess alone, participating in clean-up teaches him that his actions have consequences. Over time, experiencing consequences helps children learn self-control.

What are nutrients?

Food provides a range of different nutrients. Some nutrients provide energy, while others are essential for growth and maintenance of the body.

Carbohydrate, protein and fat are macro-nutrients that we need to eat in relatively large amounts in the diet as they provide our bodies with energy and also the building blocks for growth and maintenance of a healthy body. Vitamins and minerals are micro-nutrients which are only needed in small amounts, but are essential to keep us healthy. There are also some food components that are not strictly ‘nutrients’ but are important for health,

Breakfast is a very important meal

Just like cars, buses and trains cannot run without fuel, our bodies need energy to work. Especially after a night’s sleep, energy levels are low. So, whether you are off to school, or out and about at the weekend, start the day with breakfast. Plenty of carbohydrates is just the ticket: try toast or bread, or cereal with milk, fruit or yogurt.
